By reading the chthonic as both a recurrent allegory and organizing principle of his fiction, I approach Ellison's work through a ‘reading downward’-descending, like Dante, into the depths-as an alternative mode of engagement with his texts. For Ellison, the chthonic is a site of contradiction and paradox in which binary oppositions break down. ‘Chthonic’ (from Ancient Greek χθών, ground, soil, earth) describes that which is ‘dwelling in or beneath the surface of the earth’. This dissertation explores chthonic space in the work of Ralph Ellison. Par conséquent, inspiré par la critique postcoloniale, cet article postule et soutient que les Noirs sont constructeurs de leur propre invisibilité, lorsqu'on s'appuie sur ce roman. Cependant, cet article se démarque de cette idée répandue dès même la réception de cette oeuvre classique et soutient plutôt que même si Ellison réfléchissait et envisageait cela avec la plupart de ses critiques, il n'a pas vraiment réussi à le faire. Autrement dit, la société américaine, du fait d'être homogénéisée par la race blanche, invisibilise les Africains américains.
Résumé Invisible Man de Ralph Ellison semble suggérer que l'invisibilité des Africains américains est le produit de la manipulation de la suprématie blanche américaine. Therefore, informed by postcolonial criticism, this paper postulates and argues that Blacks create their own invisibility in Ellison's Invisible Man. Instead, it argues here that although Ellison might be thinking and envisioning this, together with most critics, he has achieved no such thing. However, this article disagrees with this so-propound idea. Put differently, the American society, shadowed by white-centered values, invisibilizes African Americans. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man seems to suggest that African Americans' invisibility is the product of the American white supremacist manipulation.
